"In this book, I try to reduce to systematic language an art of knowing and helping people which in actual practice breaks into the stages of the technique at any point where the method is most available. There are matters which in a measure surpass or defy expression in black and white. The art makes itself known by experience through efforts to respond to the outpourings of people in need, in sorrow and suffering. By comparison of instances great principles and truths become clear. Knowledge or science is one factor, the various uses of the technique another, and personality another. Thus each individual combines the several factors in his own way, while the descriptions of the method he follows read as if the technique were complete in itself. If one could convey a total impression of another's need, then report the complete study of the case, one might indeed approximate the reality which can only with difficulty be told"--Preface.
