Linkage In the Victorian era, early psychiatric writings on childhood were emerging in tandem with the great Victorian novels of childhood. The novels of Charles Dickens, Charlotte Brontë, and George Eliot and other opened up new ways of thinking about children’s minds, and had an influence on the emerging sciences of child psychology and psychiatry. Their fiction helped to create a new sensitivity to the potential sufferings of childhood, and the life-long impact of these experiences.
